I know this might be the last thing on your mind...but Living History Farms registration just opened today! If you are running, feel free to join the "Runners' Lounge" team. It will be fun!

Sending good vibes and extra energy your way! Good luck in Chicago!

That's great that you are also running your first marathon. I ran 18.32 miles last weekend... had to add the .32 because at this point I feel every little bit. This week was a step back week and then next week it's the big 20. I am a little scared but I know I will do it...the program I am using has 2 20mile runs so if one doesn't go well I have another chance. Good Luck in Chicago!

Hi Mona,

Not sure of your decision of which races to hit, but just in case the DSM marathon or half is in your plans, I did start a 2008 Des Moines Marathon Lounge Group.

Hi Mona thanks for the comment. You are doing quite well yourself. What a long way to come from the wheezing and running 5 times a week. Everything is possible....I truly believe.

Hi Mona! Thanks for the message (sorry for the slow response--it's been a crazy couple of weeks!). To answer your question, L.A. was my first marathon in March of this year.

Also, regarding work . . . I work in litigation in NYC, so I can end up working some brutal hours (70-80 hour weeks). I think the biggest help for me is creating boundaries before I start training. For instance, I am willing to skip training when it's absolutely necessary (pending deadlines, emergencies, etc.) . . . but I always make it understood ahead of time to those I work with that--under normal circumstances--I will need an hour or two a day to myself for marathon training. People seem to, for the most part, respect that as long as you let them know ahead of time. For LA, I did a lot of leaving work to run in the daylight and then coming back to finish up working . . . but will be trying to get myself used to morning runs again (to avoid the heat) for Chicago!

I think the most important thing I learned in my first marathon training experience is that you're going to need a lot more rest than you might think if you work a lot of intense hours. Sometimes it's best to give your body a break, if you're feeling at all run down. Missing a few runs here and there won't stop you from fininshing, but over-exhausting yourself just might.

Anyway, I'm rambling, but keep us up to date on how it goes! I can't wait until the big day!! :)

Mona,

Thanks for the comments, they're greatly appreciated!

My long runs went well using the RW plan for both of my marathons. It was a great feeling each time I ran a distance that I'd never done before.

Whichever program you choose, just remember that your long runs are Long Slow Distance (LSD) runs. The first time you do a new distance, be it 14, 16, or 20, take your time. Once you know how your body handles that distance, you can pick up the pace the next time, if you feel comfortable.

And if I'm doing the calculations correct, the weekend at the end of your vacation should be your last long run, using the RW program, as it provides for a 3-week taper. If you can't go long that weekend, just adjust your schedule and do your last long run the following weekend. You'll still have a two week taper and should be in great shape.

Additionally, since you'll be training during the summer, remember to drink plenty of fluids!

Best of luck with your program. Hopefully Chicago will be a little cooler this year than last. Just remember that the race is the reward for all the training runs you've done. Enjoy the day when it gets here! Maybe I'll see you there!

Run safe,
Brett

Congrats on finishing! Sorry to hear it wasn't the best day for you - but good to know I wasn't alone. I think I underestimated 72 degrees. Here's to acclimating....

Will we see you tomorrow at the top of the Dam?
Tom - 4/11/2008 11:49 PM
Just read your story, "Pushing Through." thanks for taking the time to share it.

Glad you will be joining us for Dam to Dam next month. Am also pleased to learn you are going to run Chicago Marathon.

I've run it many times, so please let me know if I can be of any assistance or support.

Keep up your great running!
